PHP Programmers & All programmers!
Do not store the majority of your code in a ‘main.php’ or ‘functions_library.php’ type of file!!
People do this for simplicity in searching through code and only having to deal with one file and I’m sure tons of other reasons.
The problem is if you loose the 1 file you just lost the majority if not all the code for your site.
You may be thinking well if I have a copy on my hard drive and one on my server it wont matter if I loose it in either place I can just replace it. That is TRUE unless you run into the problem I recently had.
My western digital USB hard drive (NOT FLASH) started acting funny and not saving the newer/modified version of the file. So, I would make changes to the code or re-write things completely upload them to the site and that was that. Days would go by and I would want to make changes again so I would open up the local files make changes and re-upload and all seems fine until I realized that I uploaded an OLD version and MODIFIED an OLD version. Problem here was my portable hard drive was NOT saving the new versions even though it was letting me upload the new version (my guess is temp. cache on my my computer HD) to my site. So now I had the old version on my drive and on the server thus forcing me to re-write what I’d done already, luckily for me I seperate my code into a library of files and not just 1 main 1 or I would have been in even more trouble.
If you are working on code for index.php store the code in /lib/index.php if you are working on code for search.php store the code in /lib/search.php, this is of course assuming you use some type of template system however small or complicated. (Always try to seperate your code from your HTML even if you still use some PHP don’t just stick your PHP at the top of your pages with design/html.)
